Name: Rejoice Ojiaku
Profession: SEO Manager & Co-Founder
Location: London, UK
How did you get into your chosen career?
I started my journey through a graduate program, which was meant to be rotational. However, I began in SEO and enjoyed it so much that I chose to stay. By the time it was time to rotate, I couldn’t bring myself to switch! Since then, I’ve grown from Junior SEO Executive to Global SEO Account Manager, Content Strategist, and now SEO Manager. I decided to specialise in Content SEO because it allowed me to apply my master’s degree in Consumer Behaviour to content strategies.
What do you love about your experience in digital marketing/SEO?
I love that digital marketing is a creative industry at its core, centred around storytelling. No matter the channel—SEO, Social, Content, Data—storytelling connects everything. That creative thread keeps things exciting and constantly evolving.
What are some campaigns/work you’ve participated in?
One campaign I really enjoyed was for Superdrug while working at Incubate as an SEO Manager. I handled the optimisation of their Google Business Profiles for over 700 stores across the UK. It wasn’t the most glamorous task, but it required a lot of organisation, from updating store hours and attributes to adding images. The client was pleased with my responsiveness, and I was proud of how much I was able to accomplish on such a large scale.
Have you noticed or faced any key challenges in your field of work?
A key challenge I’ve noticed is the lack of entry-level jobs in digital marketing. It’s not something I face personally anymore, but I see it affecting many people trying to break into the industry. There’s so much untapped talent out there, but the opportunities just aren’t available, especially at the junior level.
How did you overcome or plan to overcome these challenges?
Through the community I co-founded, we try to address this issue by sharing entry-level job opportunities and connecting with agency owners to open more junior roles. It’s an ongoing effort, but I’m hopeful that we’ll start to see more entry-level positions become available.
What do you wish was different about the digital marketing/SEO industry?
I wish there was more focus on training and nurturing junior talent. Bringing back effective graduate programs and apprenticeships would revolutionise the industry. We need to invest in the next generation of digital marketers to bring fresh perspectives and innovation.
What are your favourite tools to help you with your work?
SEMRush: Great for keyword research and competitive analysis.
Canva: Perfect for creating quick visuals to support SEO strategies.
Screaming Frog: Essential for technical audits and site crawls.
What kind of skills do you need to excel in your job/ field of work?
Analytical Thinking
Problem Solving
Organisation
Client & Project Management
Strong People Skills
People skills, in particular, have been invaluable in my career, helping me build trust and strong relationships with clients and colleagues.
Do you have any advice for people who want to get into digital marketing/SEO?
Put yourself out there! Whether it’s through networking events or taking the lead on a project, make yourself visible in a way that feels authentic to you. Growth doesn’t happen in your comfort zone, so don’t be afraid to take that step into new opportunities.
